How Can We Remove Carbon Footprint?
Methods to remove carbon footprint:
These are some of the most-talked methods of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Direct air capture- Under this method giant fans are used to suck the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. And it is further stored underground in geological formations, or it is reused to make concrete or synthetic fuel. Countries like Canada and Switzerland use Clime works and carbon engineering to develop this kind of technology. Switzerland with the help of clime works has developed the world’s biggest DAC in Iceland. This facility is called Orca and is capable of storing 4000 metric tons of carbon dioxide yearly and storing it underground.
Carbon Sequestration- Carbon sequestration is a process in which biological, physical, and chemical three processes are involved. Here the carbon dioxide is naturally eradicated from the air and is locked away underground in the oceans, trees, rocks, and the planet’s soils. For instance, when a plant grows its photosynthesis captures carbon dioxide and stores it in its leaves and branches.
Negative emissions technology- Technologies that are used to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere are known as negative emissions technologies or NETS. The ability of these technologies to quickly remove carbon emissions on a huge scale is a great advantage when compared to natural systems. Because natural systems have certain limitations and external threats like deforestation and wildfires.
however, these technologies are still in their research and development phase and are not yet scaled up. But the governments are trying their best to get them scaled up as early as possible.
Carbon stock protection- Carbon stock protection is also a great approach to removing CO2 from the air. This method separates forest areas that have high conservation value and high carbon stock from those lands which are degraded and have low carbon and biodiversity advantages that can be developed. In the context of reducing carbon dioxide and wildlife survival, restoration can help a lot in reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. We can preserve and improve biodiversity if we maximize the capacity of habitats to capture and reduce pollution. Or we can also reduce the average carbon footprint per person by country.
Carbon Mineralization- The process of converting a gas into a solid structure is called the process of carbon mineralization. This is a natural process and happens very slowly, over thousands of years. But researchers and scientists are finding a way to speed up the process of carbon mineralization. Scientists are enhancing the exposure of natural minerals to carbon dioxide in the ocean. Carbon mineralization can also be used as a method of storing carbon dioxide by injecting it into rocks so that it forms a solid carbonate structure. According to scientists, carbon mineralization is possible and few start-ups have already begun to develop this technology.
Ocean-based concepts- Many ocean-based concepts for the removal of CO2 have been introduced to increase the ocean’s capacity to capture and store carbon. However, most of these concepts are still developing and are in their early stages. Each of these concepts aims to accelerate the natural carbon cycle in the ocean. These concepts also have some co-benefits. For example- coastal blue carbon can remove carbon dioxide while adding minerals and restoring the ecosystem.
Conclusion:
All the methods mentioned above are cost-effective and have the lowest risk strategy. and are also considered the best and most efficient methods of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The time has come to invest in these carbon-removing projects because climate changes are getting worse and can cause a lot of trouble to future generations.
